Organization registration works best once the charity legally exists; some features require verified 501(c)(3) status.
Once the charity is running, you recruit where VolunteerMatch’s audience now lives: Idealist, which absorbed VolunteerMatch in 2025. You register the organization, then post opportunities that show up for people searching by cause and location.
Everything you noticed as a volunteer in the personal guide — clear scope, real impact, honest time commitment — is what your own listings now need.
Write listings for the volunteer you were
The strong listings you saved in the personal guide are your templates. A good opportunity says what the volunteer will do, how long it takes, what skills help, and what changes because they showed up. Vague listings get scrolled past; specific ones get sign-ups.

Register the organization
On idealist.org, add your organization: legal name, EIN, mission, location, and cause areas (the Idealist organization guide covers it step by step). If the charity already had a VolunteerMatch profile, it was moved to Idealist — find it under your name, then Manage.
Use a charity role email for the org profile, and administer it signed in as yourself — the same person-runs-the-page pattern as LinkedIn and Facebook.

Post your first opportunity
Model it on the listings you saved: a concrete task, the time commitment, remote or on-site, and the impact one volunteer makes. Add the charity’s logo so the listing looks alive.

Respond fast and keep listings fresh
Reply to interested volunteers within a couple of days — slow responses are the #1 way charities lose them. Close filled roles and repost seasonal ones so the profile never looks abandoned.
Common questions
Does it cost anything to post opportunities?
Volunteer listings on Idealist are free for nonprofits. Idealist sells optional extras — promoted listings, job postings, and an annual membership — which most small charities don’t need to start.
Do we need to post on both VolunteerMatch and Idealist?
No — since the 2025 merger they are one platform, so one Idealist listing reaches both audiences. Taproot is still separate and covers skills-based pro-bono projects. Post where the audience matches the need.
